PROVINCIAL BUILDINGS

Appeal To Be Made An appeal to help with the cost of restoring the Provincial Council building would be made to local bodies after a meeting of all interested persons and bodies had been held, the chairman of the management committee of the Canterbury Provincial Buildings Board (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.), said after a meeting on Monday. He said the appeal to contribute on the basis of population would be made to all local bodies in the area under the jurisdiction of the former provincial government except South Canterbury and Westland, although these areas would be asked to make a contribution. Members of the committee would ask the Minister of Lands (Mr Maclntyre) to extend the period of two years in which local bodies would be asked to contribute $50,000 as it was felt that to restrict the time would impose too heavy a load on contributors. “After this and one or two other matters have been discussed with Mr Maclntyre we will call a meeting of representatives of local bodies, members of Parliament for Canterbury and Westland, members of the Historic Places Trust and architects who have taken an interest in the building,” said Mr Macfarlane. The Government announced In March that it would give $50,000 towards the cost of restoring the wooden part of the building on condition that local bodies gave another $50,000.
