Indecent Picture Catalogues Found
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, May 13.
Auckland customs officers have found increasing numbers of catalogues containing indecent photographs in mail from overseas. Most of the people to whom the mail has been addressed have denied any knowledge of why the catalogues should be sent to them.
The Acting-Collector of Customs in Auckland, Mr A. O. Coad, said today that these people were asked to open the mail in the presence of customs officers. Most of them preferred to have the mail returned to the sender while some people just left the catalogues with the department. Mr Coad said; “As soon as they see it they don’t want any part of it. We think that most people don’t order the stuff.” Mr Coad said that the catalogues, which pictured male and female studies, appeared to come from the United States or Scandinavian countries.
Customs officers were finding more of the catalogues than they used to because they were keeping a closer watch for material of this type.
