THROTTLE CHANGE
Agwagons Grounded
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, May 12.
Cessna. Agwagon topdressing aircraft are to be grounded until a modification to maintain engine power during throttle failure has been carried out.
This was announced by the Assistant Director of Civil Aviation (Mr L F. B. Walters) today after a meeting of topdressing pilots in the Masterton district had discussed an emergency landing made by an Agwagon.
In a statement issued tonight, Mr Walters said: “Before any Cessna Agwagon aircraft are permitted to make further flights the Civil Aviation Division of the Ministry of Transport is calling up a requirement for the fitting of a spring in the throttle system to-ensure that if the throttle linkage fails, engine power is maintained. “The throttle linkage system in these aircraft had already been modified to improve reliability, but as a result of the subsequent incident in the Wairarapa our airworthiness branch, in collaboration with operators and manufacturer’s agents, is carrying out an urgent reappraisal of the system to see if further improvements can be made.”
