VENTURER SCOUTS
Camp Held At Kaiapoi Thirty-one Venturer Scouts are spending this week at the Blue Skies camp at Kaiapoi at a course which includes general instruction on bushcraft and survival. The average age of the boys is 16 and they are under the control of four instructors, including Mr A. D. Leask. who is the Canterbury area leader for Venturer Scouts, and Mr R. Kingston, a professional scouting instructor. Completion of the courses will qualify the boys for some of the certificates necessary to acquire the Queen's Scout badge. Over the week-end the boys went on a compass journey in the Waimakariri riverbed and also went on an “incident course” where they were confronted with unexpected problems.
These included dealing with an epileptic fit and getting over an electric fence. During the week the boys will be instructed in river crossing and go for a two-day hike round Mount Grey. At the end of the course certificates will be issued and on Sunday afternoon the camp will be open to visitors. This is the fourth year the camp has been held.
