RACING Big Fields For C.J.C. Meeting Next Week

Meldie and Bargain Hunter, two brilliant recent graduates from hack class, will come in for much attention when they attempt to win the Canterbury Jockey Club’s T.A.B. concession double at Riccarton next Tuesday. The Riccarton-trained Meldie won the Wellington Racing Club’s feature race over 11 furlongs last week, which run wilt assure him of favouritism for the Westport Handicap on his home track.

The Wingatui-trained Bargain Hunter was a runaway winner against the open sprinters at the Winton meeting at Invercargill last Saturday. He was hardly less impressive when he easily beat a field of hack sprinters at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting. Fields have filled well for all races except the steeplechase on the C.J.C. programme. It was necessary to eliminate three horses to reduce the otira Hack Handicap field to 30. which includes four reserves. There will be an on-course double on the Buller Hurdles and the Fox Handicap. Other attractions will be the Haast Steeplechase—the first of the year in Canterbury—and a patrons’ sweepstake. run on the Fox Handi cap. the Haast Steeples, the May Handicap, the Maiden, and the Westport and Otira Handicaps. The fields are: 11.30 a.m.—
