TRAPPED IN WELL
Woman’s Ordeal
(N.Z. Press Association)
MELBOURNE, May 12.
A woman was trapped for eight hours in a well at a lonely farmhouse at Budgerle, 111 miles from Melbourne, when she jumped in to save her baby son. Mrs Vicki Olney, aged 24, was hanging out washing at the week-end when she missed her son Adam, aged 15 months. She followed the family dog, Jet, to the well, where she found the boy floating in about 3ft of water. Mrs Olney, a nurse aide, jumped into the well, and gave her son mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. “She brought him round, but then could not get out of the well,” said her husband, Mr Raymond Olney, who was working at a nearby power station at the time. “She got Adam’s overalls, and tied them round her neck to help support the child.” Mrs Olney was eventually rescued when her mother-in-law heard her cries from the well, and went for help.
