Ponies Average $96 At Kirwee Sale

Ponies with show-ring potential and hacks with jumping ability were keenly sought at the annual Kirwee hack and pony sale yesterday. The market for plainer lots, however, was indifferent.

Ponies and hacks were bought for Invercargill, the West Coast, and Marlborough, besides districts throughout Canterbury. The sale also attracted visitors from the North Island and one lot was sold to a Petone buyer.

In spite of the large gallery, there were more passings this year, but this was partly because of the high reserves that some vendors bad %f the 122 lots offered, 78 were sold in the ring for an average of almost $96. Of 23 lots which realised $lOO or more, 17 were hacks. A grey pony gelding, standing 14.2 hands, offered by J. W. Pawson, of Darfield, topped the sale at $340. Aged

six years, it had never been unplaced in saddle classes. The buyer was F. J. Foley, of Oamaru.

A 16-hand gelding offered by S. J. Campbell, of Oamaru, changed hands at $290. It has a good record in hunting and F.E.I. events.

A grey, part-Arab mare, standing 15 hands, offered by R. L. Connelly, of Cave, was the third top-priced lot at $285. Another hack mare offered on account of the same vendor, realised $205.
