SHARE PRICES BID UP IN LIGHT MONDAY TRADING
The New Zealand sharemarket was tight yesterday. Trading was light, but the urge to buy in spite of high prices made rises outnumber falls by two to one, and boosted the prices of most leading issues.
Insurances were popular in the Monday market, South British gaining 8c and N.Z.I. putting on sc. The Neu’ Zealand Forest issues rose further—by 4c and 6c for ex Bartholomew shares and Tasman added 10c. Other leaders rose also, but by smaller amounts. P.T.Y. stood out among second-line stocks with a 12c jump to
162 c, other gains being marginal. The few falls were mostly small too. New Zealand Breweries, the only leader to decline, lost 2c after gaining 1c last week. The overseas list was strong, Carpenter adding 32c, B.H.P. regaining 25c of last week’s 115 c loss, and Peko adding another 10c.
