Mr Kirk Earns Most In 10-mile Walk
(N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, May 11. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk) walked 10 miles from New Plymouth to Waitara yesterday to raise funds for the Y.M.C.A. Mr Kirk, who was sponsored for nearly $5OO, earned the most for the YJH.CJL’s $12,500 expansion programme. He walked with the member of Parliament for New Plymouth (Mr R. M. Barclay). They kept up a
steady pace all the way and finished the 10 miles in 2b 45min. With a party of college girls, they sprinted the last 200 yards. “My feet gave me no trhuble,” Mr Kirk said after the walk. “I used to do a lot of deer-stalking and pig-hunting until the hills got steeper.” Not far behind Mr Kirk in sponsorship was the Mayor of New Plymouth (Mr D. V. Sutherland), who earned more than $4OO. Mr Sutherland finished in just over three hours.
