TROTTING Barrhill Shows Courage In Win At Oamaru

"The Press” Special Service

DUNEDIN.

A courageous performance by Barrhill in winning the feature event, the North Otago Pace, highlighted the Oamaru Trotting Club’s winter meeting on Saturday. The four-year-old gelding overcame difficulties like a champion, and seems certain to take a high rating for his Hinds owner-trainer, W. E. Lowe.

Ban-hill is by Light , Brigade from Colmar, and is a brother to the good winner, Coi-war. Mitcham, by Brahman, is also from the same mare. Both Corwar and Mitcham : have done well as stayers. 1 When the field settled down, ] Barrhill had a dozen rivals 1 ahead of him and he lost fur- j ther ground when involved in , a skirmish at the end of three i furlongs. He improved three ( wide with just over a round , to go, and showed up wide i out near the leaders at the ! home turn. The pacemaker, Dieman Lad. still held a. hapdy advantage over Barrhill a furlong out, but Alandria. forging through the middle, was the danger. Alandria headed Dieman . Lad, but Barrhill ranged up , to her. Lowe does not punish ' his horses, and it says much J for Barrhill’s courage that , he inched up to Alandria and 1 got his nose in front on the | post. Alandria’s effort was also : impressive and she should , soon make amends. Oilman Lad Third Dieman Lad held on gamely , for third, half a length in I front of Saladin, with senator Frost, Dryden Smoke, Showpiece. Seateld Countess, and Rhlnegolde spread across the track close up. Saladin. Cathpete. Rhinegolde. Senator Froet. Showpiece and Seafleld Countess gave ground ! at the start, while Cardinal ‘ Hanover, Alandria, Barrhill, ■ Ngaitahu, and Highfire all met ' trouble when Highland Mecca ' tangled after three furlongs. Three-year-olds were to the ■ fore with True Averil, Beau Winter and Dryden Francis all . winning attractively. True Averil led over the final . 10 furlongs of the Ayson Handicap and came away in the straight to win by four lengths from Michaeloe, with a length to Golden Splendour. It was an impressive display by the winner as Martin Twinkle tried to wrest the lead from him in the middle stages. Michaeloe and Golden Splendour both finished on strongly without looking a threat to the winner. The well-supported Intrepid ; had to be content with the fifth , placing. He began slowly and , was forced five wide running through the straight with a ] round to go. He was alongside True Averil at the half-mile but ■ began to wilt near the home , turn.
