Cyrus Drops Dead

The Irish-bred sire Cyrus, which was purchased by the Hampton Lodge Stud, Invercargill, at the dispersal of the Dee Lodge Stud, Auckland, last January, died yesterday. Mr A. J. Lawton, of the Hampton Lodge Stud, said that Cyrus “just dropped dead in his paddock.’’ It is intended to carry out a post mortem. Cyrus, by Darius from Good Line, by Owen Tudor, won three races and 916,507 in stakes Foaled in 1959, his stud career in the initial stages was plagued by infertility, only 11' foals being sired by him in his' first two seasons.
But these included a top Australian galloper in Cyron, winner of the 922,000 George Adams Handicap (Im.) at Flemington, when he beat the Caulfield Cup winner, Bunratty Castle. Cyron also dead-heated with Yootha in the 924,000 Australian Cup. Others among the few runners sired by Cyrus were Son ofi Cyrus (Port Adelaide Guineas), j Prince Cyrus. Bundarra, Bob’s Gift, and Top Gear.
