RACING Every Post Ends Season With Amberley Cup Win

Every Post finished Ms three-year-old racing with a game, narrow win in the Amberley Cup at Rangiora on Saturday. The Riccarton trainer, G. D. Lee, will now put Mr J. D. Gregan’s Llanstephan gelding aside until next season.

Every Post’s connections decided to spell him largely on the advice of the successful jockey, N. Eastwood. Eastwood, after Saturday's race, paid a tribute to Every Post’s gameness. “He felt as if he had run his race short of the post but his heart carried him on," Eastwood said. But Eastwood, a former Jticcarton lightweight, felt that Every Post’s run in the Amberley Cup did not have quite the same sparkle as the ene which gave him a win in the Nelson Cup, or a fourth in the Gloaming Stakes at Trentiam. • Sustained Battle » Every Post won the Amber- ■ fey Cup by a head after a sustained battle with Sandbank. ‘ They never seemed to be more than a head apart in the last two furlongs. , Sandbank showed more than the usual brand of battling qualities close to home when he attempted to savage Every Post which was running close . alongside on his left Every Post had one of his three wins as a two-year-old at Amberley a year ago—then finished his first-season programme with 4 win at the Canterbury. Jockey Club's May meeting. * Every Post was bought as a weanling by Mr Gregan with his dam, Twilight Post. Mr Gregan resold Twilight Post not long after. The Alonzo mare has not bad produce since then. Odds On Fancy Every Post paid 51.90 to win and $1.05 for a place on Saturday. Many of his course backers must have had their doubts whether their outlay for such uninviting odds would pay off when he ran forward keenly wide out early and joined Pango in the lead more than six furlongs out Pango did not offer much competition for long, but there was a race in earnest for Every Post when F. H. Skelton took Sandbank forward to dispute the lead at the half-mile. On the double. Every Post carried $15,230.50 of the pool of $37,514. Lady Fort was the top fancy with Every Post’s doubles supporters for the second leg, the G. B. Starky Memorial, but failed to finish in the first half dozen. Gay Doctor saved the day for Washdyke, though, with a stylish win for Mr and Mrs J. T. Daly, ridden by D. Sanderson.

Memorable Day In winning by three parts of a length, Gay Doctor com-

pleted a treble for Sanderson and the Washdyke trainer, W. Turner. Earlier, this combination had triumphed with Lady Glory and Auto’s Pride. In _u. j. each win, Sanderson—who deelded to settle in the South Island a year ago—rode patient-

ly, and with good judgment of his mount’s qualities. On . track which was t “ wa ® t 0 their liking, New Mint and Senator Jack came up with generous runs for second and third respectively be hind Gay Doctor. Billy Joe took a short lead

on the home turn, surrendered it quickly just inside the furlong, but rallied when E. G. Low put the whip away, an( j missed third by only a head. The win favourite. Time and Tide, did not show much early pace, and it was late before he picked up ground for fifth.
