Obituary Miss C. Garmson
Miss Christine Garmson, known for her voluntary work in the community, died in .Christchurch recently. Born in Invercargill, Miss Garmson trained as a teacher at Dunedin Teachers’ College. She began her teaching career at Lakeside when her family moved to Canterbury during the First World War. When she retired in 1943, she was infant mistress at Phillipstown.
Miss Garmson had an outstanding memory and kept in touch with hundreds of former pupils. She was the founder, a life member, and a former president of the Christchurch branch of the Southland Old Girls’ Association. Twice yearly for 17 years, Miss Garmson, assisted by her
sister, Jean, organised ' reunions for retired women teachers and in this way she fostered friendship among hundreds from all parts of Canterbury and the West Coast. Miss Garmson was a well known session member of Knox Presbyterian Church, having served in every branch of the church’s work. She was particularly interested in missionary activities, both in New Zealand and overseas.
She was a driver for the Blind Institute and was also a member of the Good Samaritan Society. Miss Garmson is survived by two sisters, Grace (Mrs Donald Gray) and Miss Jean Garmson.
