LA LECHE LEAGUE
The first conference of the La Leehe League of New Zealand will be held in Hamilton on May 16 and 17 at the University of Waikato. Miss Jennifer Wybourne and Mrs Mary Browne, of the Christchurch branch, will attend. Mrs Browne will take her six-month-old daughter, Maria. “The Naturalness Of Nursing” will be the subject of a talk given by Dr W. G. Whittlestone, of the Ruakura Agricultural Research Centre, at a public meeting bn the evening of May 17. Topics which will be discussed at the conference include the role of the league in New Zealand; communicating with interested mothers; relationship with the parent league; finances and fund-raising; publicity; unusual cases; and new developments. The Christchurch branch of the league has completed a series of four monthly meetings this year. Informal Discussions
Meeting in a private home, an average of about 20 women joined in informal discussions on topics including, advantages of breastfeeding to mother and baby, the art of breastfeeding and overcoming difficulties, baby arrives, the family and the breastfed baby, and nutrition and weaning. The second series of meetings for the year will be held on the second Wednesday of every month, beginning on May 14. Any interested women are welcome to attend either for part or for all of the series. Babies are welcome.
Several mothers have received breastfeeding help by telephone, which side of the La Leehe League’s service is expected to grow. It is freely available to any mother, whether or not she has attended meetings or is a member.
