Christchurch Has Narrow Win
CHRISTCHURCH 15; J. Gordon try, K. Connell a dropped goal, J. Stenhouse three penalties.
UNIVERSITY B 8: P. Mcßride, G. Grimwood tries, D. Papps a conversion.
Christchurch, helped by the inventiveness and experience of D. A. Arnold, held out University B to score a narrow win in the match played at Ilam.
From the time he repulsed the first strong University attack with a long clearing kick, Arnold directed and secured Christchurch’s advantage.
He dominated the back play of both sides, and involved his own backs in a serious of spectacular scissors passes. At the point when University looked as
lif it could win, late In the 'second half, Arnold intercepted while University was on attack [and with a carefully-judged pass sent J. Gordon away for a try. | The match was fast and open, iboth sides attempting to use I their backs.
D. Phillipson. the University ihalf-back, played a fine game, set up P. Mcßride for the first try, and sent lhe backs away with swift, accurate passes. W. Risman, the Christchurch lock, dominated the line-outs, jumping and taking the ball easily. When he did not win the ball, he often took it from the opposing forward in the ensuing ruck. He set the example followed by the Christchurch pack, for often when University won the ball in a ruck or line-out it was robbed by quick, clever work by the Christchurch pack. The University backs ran well but the wing, B. Kerr, who looked the most dangerous, received too little of the ball. He looked for chances throughout the match, but few came.
Referee: Mr J. M. Lang,
