CANTERBURY LIFTERS BREAK RECORDS

A New Zealand and a Canterbury record were broken and another New Zealand record equalled at an Olympic lifting try-out held at the Canterbury Amateur Weight-lifting Association’s gymnasium in Oxford Terrace.

The national middle-weight champion. T. Ebert, set a Canterbury record of 2251 b for the snatch lift and equalled his own New Zealand press record of 2701 b.

G. May, of Christchurch Boys’ High School, who weighs 17st at the age of 17, set a new national junior record for the snatch lift with 214}1b. Both Ebert and May missed cleaning the bar for the jerk and thus did not gain totals for the three lifts.

The secretary of the Canterbury association, A. Roy, showed good form to gain a qualifying total for the New Zealand championships. C. Fraser also lifted well for a total of 5781 b at a bodyweight of 1511 b. S. Crotty, a former South Island title-holder, made a convincing total of 5571 b after resuming training following an absence of about five years from (ftimpetitive lifting.
