Beri Kicks Seven Goals
The South Island trial preceding the match between Canterbury and West Coast at the Show Grounds on Saturday probably proved more beneficial to the Canterbury selectors than their. Southern Zone and New Zealand counterparts. With a return challenge against Coast scheduled for June 32, the provincial panel should have boon most interested in the performances of W. D. Beri, a full-back able to beat opposing plAyers and to kick goals; G. C. Gass, who out-
hooked the well-periormed A. Clark, 22-8, in the scrums; and B Williams, a most constructive centre. Beri. at stand-off half in the first spell, and then at full-back affer the interval, again showed the deceptive Motwork which enables him to evade tackles. He also kicked seven goal* to lead the B team to a 38-31 win over the A team.
The outstanding hooking of Gats kept possession from the A team’s back*, but his own team-mates were unable to penetrate tie defence until Williams made several fine breaks in the second half. Two attacking wings, D. Men-
zies and J. Watts, each scored two trie* in only 40 minute* on the field. For the B team, Menzies (two). P. R. H. Brown (two), M. J. Morgan (two). R. Griffen arid G. a. Cowan scored tries and Beri kicked seven goals from nine attempts. The A team’s trie* were scored by Wbtts (two), B. Bigwood. W. R. Robertson;- W. R. Green. Haffenden and G. Tunul, and G. Woodgatl, kicked five goals from Six attempts. : & J. Rosanowski had earlier misted three goals. too referee (Mr P. Yaxley) awarded 12 of the 16 penalties to the B team.
