M. Salt Gains Fastest Grass-Track Time ,

- A Christchurch speedway tjfder. M. Salt, on a 250 c.c. Esso, yesterday gained the fastest time over one mile at the Pioneer Motor Club’s first grassirack meeting at Sefton. Salt was one of about 50 speed* way, scrambler and sidecar rjders who took part in the meeting. More than 1500 people watched the 27 races. Salt took part in three races. He finished third in the first, fpr speedway machines, but Won the next two, improving his time with each race. His fastest time* was Imin 31sec for four laps of the quarter-mile fiat surface. The sidecar races attracted four entries in each race, ■ftiere was close competition between W. Philp and his sidecar rider, D. Wylie, and L. Dwight hnd G. Cox. -Philp and Wylie comfortably Won the first race. In the tecond, Dwight and Cox sneaked perienced Philp and Wylie torced them to go too fast into 7 bend. They came out vide. Slowing Philp to ateer through on the inside for another win. . In the last race, Dwight and Cox took the lead again at the start and seemed assured of a win when a machine further •ack somersaulted and the race Was stopped- In the- re run. Philp and Wylie broke away for their third win. G. Holland, an experienced scramble rider, won the first sfrent on the programme in lanin 40sec. This time was redhiced by Ssec before the end eT the meeting.

Alter several races, the four fastest scramble Mders were pitted against each-other. Holland <3BO c*. C.Z.), A. Sabiston <250 8.5. A.), P. Doecke <360 C.Z.) and J. Douglas, of Dunedin (500 8.5. A.) lined up for the one mile race. Doecke led away from the first bend, where Holland. in second place, fell. Then Doecke fell at the entrance to the straight and Douglas, who bad recorded the previous fastest times, held on to win in Imin 34.65ec. Douglas's time encouraged him to try his machine against the speedway riders and in their next race he finished third. In this race Salt set the fastest time. Another speedway rider, K. Burt, aged 16, who is in his first season of speedway riding, beat Salt in the first race and , finished second to him in the . second.
