45 Schools Visited By Board Members

Forty-five schools in South Canterbury visited by a party of members and staff of the Canterbury Education Board over eight days were found to be well staffed with teachers efficient and happy, said the board’s secretary-manager (Mr W. P. Spencer) yesterday.

Schools visited were all in the old South Canterbury Education Board district, which disappeared when that board amalgamated with the North Canterbury, Grey and Westland boards to form the present Canterbury Education Board. The board party visited the site of the 1 proposed Twizel township where it is expected classrooms will be ready to open at the beginning of the third term this year. Mr Spencer said that both

a primary and a secondary school were planned for Twizel, which would have an estimated school population of 1000 children by 1972. By December of this year, about 160 primary children would be attending the new school. Water supply, sewerage and recreation area arrangements had already been made, and proposed development had been explained by the resident engineer for the projet (Mr T. Storey). Secondary school pupils would travel 30 miles to the Otematata High School until secondary accommodation was provided, but the aim was to be a step in front of Ministry of Works development and provide for needs, Mr Spencer said.

Because temperatures at Twizel were about seven degrees colder than at Otematata, the design of the schools included provision for adequate insulation in floors and ceilings, he added. The tour, which lasted from April 30 to May 7, was made by 10 board members including the chairman (Mr A. S. Murray), the district senior inspector of primary schools (Mr B. J. Wilson), Mr Spencer, the assistant secretary ■(Mr D. Wilson) and the superintendent of works (Mr G. W. Hales).

Vintage Car Rally Cars from all over the world will take part in a Sydney-to-Melbourne rally for veteran and vintage cars next year. They include 93 entries from New Zealand. Although entries do not close until next month, 500 entries have already been received and there is a waiting list of 200. The rally will be held in conjunction with the bicentenary commemoration of Captain Cook’s landing in Australia. —Sydney, May 11.
