Stranded On Island
After the outboard motor on bis boat failed while he was fishing in the Waimakariri River on Saturday afternoon a man was stranded on a shingle island near the Main North Road traffic bridge for about five hours. He tried to attract attention by lighting fires with fuel from the motor.
He is Mr R. L. Wendt, of 44 Hollyford Avenue, Bryndwr.
The outboard motor failed about 4.30 p.m. and Mr Wendt beached the boat on the island. He was not able to attract attention until about 9.40 p.m. When two young men noticed his plight. Mr N. E. Palmer, of Clarkville, stopped his vehicle and he used a rope to haul Mr Wendt on to the bridge with the assistance of Mr M. Morrell of 5A Akaroa Street, Kaiapoi, and Mr M. W. Grooby, of 21 Akaroa Street. Yesterday Mr Wendt retrieved his boat from the island.
