DJAKARTA, May 11
The Indonesian Government will carry out the act of free choice in West Irian from July 10 to August 5, a Government spokesman announced today, despite the recent trouble in the Central Western Highlands, where primitive tribesmen have rebelled against Indonesian rule.
The non-voting consensus among 1000 community leaders will decide whether the former Dutch territory will remain part of Indonesia. The Indonesian Foreign Minister (Dr Adam Malik) said yesterday after a Cabinet meeting that the situation in West Irian was now normal. He was commenting on reports that the United Nations Secretary-General (U Thant) had stressed the need for an improvement in the atmosphere in West Irian before the act of free choice could be carried out
