U.K. SHEEP PROJECT

A READER has sent in a cutting from an English newspaper reporting another development in the British sheep industry. It reads: “The Imperial Tobacco Company’s recent decision to form a company with

Scottish farmer, Brian Cadzow, means that this industrial giant will be entering sheep farming ill a very special way.

“At Winehburgh, East Lothian. Mr Cadzow has a unique flock of 3700 sheep. In just eight years he has produced two entirely new breeds which could revolutionise the British sheep' industry.

‘The main business of the new company (Glendevon Farms, Limited) will he to sell rams of the two new breeds to both highland and lowland farmers. “By running a Cadzow Improver ram with a flock of Welsh Mountain, Blackface or Cheviot ewes hill farmers can produce superior crossbred ewes for sdle to arable farmers. These ewes are then mated with Mr Cadzow’s second new ram (known as the Hybrid Fat Lamb Sire). Each pregnancy yields an average of over two lambs which can be bom at nearly any time of the year. This means that fat lamb can be produced to coincide with the most profitable period in the market.

“A feature of the ewes is that they are quite small and have a low food requirement. Their docility makes them ideally suitable for Intensive management. The lambs also have qn exceptionally good growth rate.
