TROTTING Atheist And Somerset Gold Oamaru Picks

Atheist and Somerset Gold are certain to be among the favourites for the Welcome Handicap and the Horace Benson Handicap, the two legs of the on-course concession double at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s winter meeting today.

Atheist was an impressive winner at Methven last month at his only race. There was much merit in Ms effort as he drew the second line. He has done the same at Oamaru, but the two-mile journey should enable him to make up any leeway without too much effort. Atheist is a stablemate of the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes favourite. Glamour, and he should give D. P. Grice's stables a good start to the day. Perhaps the hardest for Atheist to boat will be Lucky Lord, which will be racing on his home track. Lucky Lord was runner-up to Pun at the Methven meeting at his last start, an effort which entitles him to serious consideration in this field. Light Globe, another to draw unfavourably, should master the distance as well as any of the others, although boM showings are likely from Red King, FUckaway and King Dillon. SomotMt Goid should gain an overdue win in the Horace Benton Hsadirap, He raced last at Bangien Raceway on March ISvrkenhe finished a distant second to Prosper over two miles. In the mean-

time Prosper has gained three decisive wins, stamping him as one of the most promising pacers tn his class. His form suggests that Somerset Gold will be untroubled to win. Teen Hoven and Van Rover finished third in their divisions of the maiden race at Methven last month. If they have made the improvement expected, they should take beating. Garry Walla, which finished second to Atheist in good time when he qualified at Addington Raceway on March 31, will create interest in his race debut. The brother of a top juvenile of his time, Sally Boy, looks most promising and he may be capable of winning first up. Siouan, Rhythmatic and Dryden Hanover are others expected to race prominently.
