VACANCIES—PROFESSIONAL GOVERNMENT OF FIJI Department of Lands, Mines and Surveys vacancy for INSPECTOR OF MINES APPLICATIONS are Invited for appointment on contract to the post of INSPECTOR OF MINES in the Lands, Mines and Surveys Department in Fiji. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: A degree or diploma in metalliferous mining from a recognised university or school of mines, and at least two years’ post graduate practical mining experience. DUTIES: Responsibility for inspection and safety of mines, quarries and explosive magazines, including acident investigations, administration of explosives laws and the giving of technical advice and assistance to miners and prospectors. SALARY: Salary will be in the scale $F2184 x 962472 x 114-2700 X 114-2928 x 126-3306 x 132-4362, the entry point being in accordance with qualifications and experience. (SFIOO-SAIOI.S“SNZIOI.S). ALLOWANCE: A non-taxable allowance will also be paid in the range £Stg.sOB to £Stg.B29 (£Stg.lOO= 8F209). GRATUITY: A gratuity of 25 per cent of the total salary and allowance received during resident service and approved leave is payable on satisfactory completion of contract. TOUR OF DUTY; Two, two and a half or three years. LEAVE: Leave on full salary is allowed on completion of contract at the rate of 3} or 4 days for each complete month of resident service, and in addition during the tour local leave of 12 days for each complete year of resident service is granted, subject to the exigencies of the Department. QUARTERS: A married officer will be provided with quarters, including heavy furniture, for a rental of 10 per cent of salary up to 8F2400 and 3 per cent of that part of salary in excess of that figure. A married officer without children but accompanied by his wife, may be allocated a flat instead of a house. If under the age of 45 years, an unaccompanied married officer or a single officer will be accommodated if possible in a bachelor’s mess for a rental at half the rate mentioned above. If aged 45 or over, or if accommodation in the mess is not possible, the officer will receive a rent subsidy of up to SF7O per month. EDUCATION: Education to University Entrance level is available in Suva. The new University of the South Pacific is also in Suva. However, if children continue at school in Australia-New Zealand a substantial education allowance will be paid, and air passages will also be provided for children to visit Fiji twice in each complete period of 12 months of resident service. PASSAGES: Tourist Class air passages to and from Fiji will be provided for the officer, his wife, and up, to four children under the age of 19 years who are to continue at school outside Fiji.
