Political Career Suggested To Graduates

University graduates < had a duty to consider; taking an active part in politics and party politi- ' cal discussions, said Sir lan Maclennan, the Brit-; ish High Commissioner ] to New Zealand, at the! Lincoln College graduation ceremony yesterday. j Sir lan Maclennan said 1 graduates were too often 1 content to revert to the prac-' tice of their undergraduate days, and just sit back and 1 criticise. In these days of specialisation there was a danger that politics would become the one sphere of human activity to be neglected as being nobody’s business—simply because it was everybody's business.

He did not mean that a university degree was necessary for a statesman, said Sir lan Maclennan. A flair was necessary for politics, and one had to be born with such flair; It could not be conferred. But a university man could have a flair fbr politics as well as any other person, and he should offer his services. “If a university education doesn’t make, a natural politician into a better politician, then there’s something the matter with university education," he said. There was a tendency in a

democracy, said Sir lan Maclennan, to take the view that members of Parliament ought to be grateful for being elected. Instead, be said candidates for election were entitled to the respect of the community for being willing to under* take such important work. Sir lan Maclennan said there should be no more honorable career in a democracy that public service, and the most honorable of all was participation in politics. The following degrees and diplomas were conferred by the Chancellor of the University of Canterbury (Mr T. H. McCombs), some of them in absentia:— Doctors o» Philosophy B. w.
