Welsh To Keep Whistle
(WXP-A. Staff Correspondent) LONDON. New Zealand’s Rugby museum at Palmerston North is unlikely to obtain the referee’s whistle used in the famous—or infamous Wales-Afl Black match of 1995. The whistle blast of the Scottish referee, Mr J. Dallas, ordered a scrum instead of a try when Bob Deans thought J* e J 1 * 1 ocored in the second half for the AM Blacks. - J- B. G. Thomas, Rugby writer for the Cardiff “West-
1 era Mail,’’ said that the mu-: seum wanted to obtain the ; whistle. ■ But he added: "I have the t whistle and I have promised I it to the Welsh Rugby mu-i ’ seum at Cardiff Arms Park.; » Despite the temptation to ; : pass it to New Zealand, 1 1 i think it is fitting it should 1 be at the Arms Park.” There is a New Zealander I in Wales at the moment, how- ’ , ever, who hopes to take home J f a consolation prize. HR is Mr ; tK, B. Williams, of Christ i I church, who retired two years i ago as assistant registrar of ’ the lands and deeds division ] ■ of the Justice Department, !
He. emigrated from Wales 44 years ago and this is his first trip back there. Mr Williams wants to take back to New Zealand a piece of turf from Cardiff Arms Park, place it in an urn and put, it up for competition as "The Ashes’’ in Rugby tests between Wales and New Zealand. I Mr W. H. Clement, secretary of the Welsh Rugby Union, commented after the park has taken a pounding during the season: “The greatest difficult facing Mr Williams may be finding a piece of turf at the Arms Park with any grass on it”
