Agnew Deplores Campus Riots

(N.Z. Preu Atsociatiow—Coppright) PROVO (Utah), May 9. Vice-President Spiro Agnew yesterday lashed out at the organisers of campus riots, saying: “The goals of education cannot be attained in a condition of anarchy or uproar.”

Addressing 10.000 students at the Brigham Young University—which has never had a major disorder—Mr Agnew said that the nation’s colleges were, in effect, under siege. “This is not mere delin-

quency, not mere disruption,” he said. “Both words dismiss too lightly the grave implications of campus disorders and the reaction to them that is reverberating across the country.

“The vast, faceless majority of Americans are in a , quiet fury over these campus troubles, and have good reasons to be so."

The Vice-President said that legitimate questions and

protests by students were healthy. “But,” he added, “such questioning and criticising and listening must be done objectively, logically and, above all, lawfully." Mr Agnew called on college administrators to take a strong stand. "When administrators and faculties capitulate before storm-trooper tactics, they are doing not only a grave disservice to academic freedom, but to ail freedoms,” he declared. Meanwhile, student turmoil continued throughout the United States, riots, vandalism, fires and other violence being reported from at least 10 campuses. “ ‘
