Negro Students In Take-over

Petrol-fed fires blazed in the grounds of Howard University, Wash- ; ington, last night as policemen, armed with tear-gas, tried in vain to move about 2500 Negro protesters who had ordered all white people off the campus. - The students of the university are predominantly Negro.

The dissidents began pelting cars and buses with stones near the main gate of . the university, which, has been closed because Of the Negro take-over of the buildings and their barricading of the cinym gates. A fire broke out in the Reserve Officer Training Corps building and, when firemen responded, they were pelted with stones and one of their appliances was set , on fire. The police exploded four i tear-gas shells, but the wind • dissipated the gas. , The Negro student leaders warned white people to leave ! the campus ' because, they said, “our anger is going to explode indiscriminately." Later eye-witnesses said there were about 2000 to ■ 2500 Negroes, both students ( and non-students, on the campus, but no white people could be seen. The Negro students have ; defied university orders and a court injunction that they must abandon their occupation of the buildings, now in its third day. Yesterday morning, the I auditorium of a student
