TYRE-TESTER INSTALLED
The world’s largest tyretesting machine, which cost more than $500,000, has been installed in the Birmingham headquarters of the Dunlop company. The machine tests massive earth-mover tyres at simulated speeds of up to 80 m.p.h. The machine can test the largest tyres in the world, and is housed in a special building 36ft high and 80ft long. Tyres are tested at'overloads of up to 100 per cent and up to 200 per cent overinflated.
Meanwhile, researchers in the United States are working on processes which make use of worn-out car tyres. The tyres, they say, can be an important source of valuable chemicals, and also of gases
which can be use for heating and power generation. In one test tyres were shredded and heated to 500 degrees Centigrade in a special reactor. About 140 gallons of oils and 1500 cu. ft of gas were produced from each ton of bld tyres.
