UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY DEGREES CONFERRED

“New Zealand needs your talents,” the Chancellor of the University of Canterbury (Mr T. H. McCombs) told graduands from the University of Canterbury 7 at yesterday’s graduation ceremony.

Science, engineering, music and fine arts degrees were conferred in the morning and those in the faculties of arts, law and commerce, in the afternoon.

Considerable forward progress in knowledge affecting the lives of men was being made in the field of science, but it had to be interpreted and considered for best results and those in the arts and social sciences, were looked to for this, the Chancellor said at the afternoon ceremony.

He emphasised the importance of language in communication and understanding. New Zealand could no longer live by itself and the talents of graduates were needed by the country. As leaders of tomorrow, graduands would bear privileges and responsibility. They would have a duty to be well informed about good citizenship and ensuring that decisions were made on proper grounds. Mr McCombs said the university had a responsibility to provide refresher courses for graduates, and the needs of the country moulded courses.
