Antarctic Bursary Cut For 3 Years
No bursaries for students to study in the Antarctic would be provided by the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Antarctic Society for three years, said the president (Mr R. M. Heke) at the annual meeting last evening.
The society’s five-year commitment to provide a bursary was completed this year and because of financial problems, the committee had decided to defer making any further award for three years, Mr Heke said. >. “The branch hopes that some kind of bursary scheme will continue,” said Mr Heke. “It will apply to the TransAntarctic Association for funds. If the society can carry on the scheme, students from all universities in New Zealand could apply for the bursary.” The Rev. J. Keith suggested that a dedication service for a year’s work be held before the Antarctic summer season started. “A dedication service would give character to the programme,” he said. The committee will consid-
er the suggestion. » The committee will also consider a suggestion by Mr A. Anderson that it would contribute to the Canterbury Museum’s centennial appeal. Mr Anderson said about $BO,OOO would have to bd provided by the public. Any books on Antarctica to supplement the Antarctic library would also be welcomed.
Officers elected were: president, Mr R, M. Heke; vicepresidents, Miss R. McLean, Mr C. Gray; immediate past president, Mr H. F. Griffiths, honorary secretary and treasurer, Miss B. Burley; honorary auditor, Miss I. O. Orchard; committee, Messrs J. Mather, F. Gurney, A. Anderson, B. D. Duffield, J. R. Claydon, B. George, S. Smith, Rev. J. Keith, Mesdames M. 1 Williams and Y.
