Ph.D. Back To Garden

A Christchurch man had the degree of doctor of philosophy in zoology conferred on him at the University of Canterbury graduation ceremony yesterday, and went back to market gardening. He is Mr A. R. Mundy, formerly employed by the Marine Department in fisheries research. “I am still lighting the department to try to get back my job as fisheries research scientist," he said yesterday. He did not want to cleave Christchurch and work in Wellington for the department and his case had been heard by the Public Service Appeal Board.

If this did not succeed, he would take it to the Supreme Court. In the meantime, he was making a living by market gardening in Christchurch, Mr Mundy said. Among the graduands were a number of overseas students. In the faculty of engineering, there were 14 from Malaysia, South Vietnam, Singapore, Kenya, Fiji, Indonesia, and the Pacific Islands. Vellekoop, lecturer in psychology at the university, received her doctorate yesterday.

Two brothers, Messrs Lawrence and Mark Lumsden, of Christchurch, both received their B.A. degrees. Lawrence is the elder and came back

for the graduation ceremony from Australia, where he is involved in a research project on the Aborigines. Mr Mark Lumsden works for the Reserve Bank in Wellington. Six R.N.Z.A.F. members received degrees—the biggest number from the Air Force to graduate since World War 11.

Three of the men are members of the University Cadet Squadron and are still at Wigram. They are acting Pilot Officers P. A. Cochran, K. Hilem and N. A. Davey, who received B.Sc. degrees. From the North Island came a former cadet, Flying Officer P. K. Toulson, bachelor of arts; and two officers who obtained degrees In their own time, Squadron Leader A. W. Rodgers, 8.A.; and Flight Lieutenant R. W. Horne, M.A.
