Tenders For Tug
Because of restrictive conditions imposed by the Customs Department, is appeared that there would be no overseas tenders for the new tug, the works committee reported to the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday. If an overseas tender was accepted it would be subject to 25 per cent British preferential tariff or 60 per cent most favoured nation and general tariff, which would make the price prohibitive. The Customs Department had advised that a licence to import a tug would only be granted if there were no shipbuilders in New Zealand capable or willing to build the tug or if the construction time was excessive.
Invitations to tender were advertised on March 11 to close on April 30, but after an application for extension the closing date had been fixed for May 28.
