Cool Reception Of Benefit Rises
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 7. Increases in social security benefits announced by the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) today have been received coolly by the Labour Party.
The Leader of the Opposi- ’ tion (Mr Kirk) who heard of : the increases only hours be- ' fore a major Labour Party rally in Palmerston North tonight, described them as, “far too late and Mill too low.” Mr Kirk said a person could only “feel a blush of shame atl
the real reasons behind the Government’s .action.” The increases should not be regarded as a change of heart by the Government, but as a “desperate spur -of - themoment attempt to deny the powerful criticism of the National Development Council in a national weekly riewsIpaper this week,” Mr Kirk, said. “It only needs to be con- 1 sidered that the announce-* ment was made by the Prime i Minister rather than the, Minister responsible, and that 1 it comes only a short time 1 after the Minister of Finance 1 was calling the Labour Party’s ; proposals for increased bene-. fits ‘Labour lolly' and irre- ’ sponsible.” i (Announcement, Back i Page) i
