Priest Sent To Gaol
(N.Z.P.A. -Reuter— Copyright) MADRID, May 6. Spain’s Public Order Court, which tries political offences, has sentenced a Basque priest to one year’s imprisonment on charges of insulting the authorities and illegal propaganda. The Rev. Pedro Berrio Ategortua, a curate in Amorebieta parish, Biscay Province, was convicted yesterday ot sending offensive letters to the local Mayor and councillors last June.
His letters protested at the Spanish flag being carried into Church for official ceremonies and called for boycott of masses attended by local authorities in their official capacity.
Under Spain’s 1953 concordat with the Vatican, priests sentenced to gaol sentences normally serve them in a monastery or other religious house. Father Berrio was also ordered to pay a fine of 10,000 pesetas (>130).
