Day To Strengthen Basketball Team
The former Otago player, I. Day (Checkers-Y-Boys), has been chosen for the Canterbury men’s basketball team to contest the Canadian Goodwill Tournament at Blenheim on May 17.
Day, who played an important part in Otago’s victory in the New Zealand championship last season, should prove a decided asset to Canterbury. He is the only member of the nine-man team, announced yesterday by the chief selector-coach (Mr G. D. Dempsey), who did not play for Canterbury at some stage last season. However, he is no newcomer to the province. Before moving to Dunedin he spent a period in Christchurch and has already represented Canterbury. J. Utley (University), who made a fine job of the centre position last season, was not available for the tournament.
However, R. Millard, the 6ft 6in Y.M.C.A. player, has already proved himself to be a capable first string centre. If he fails to measure up to expectations, Mr Dempsey can always fall back on A. Hounsell (Old Boys) or P. Stigley (University). Both are very capable centres but it is as forwards that they have the best chance of representing New Zealand. Hounsell is the most effective long shooter in Canterbury.
The team is: M. Clements, R. Millard (Y.M.C.A.). .1. Culliiord. T. Guthrie, P. Stigley. A. Taylor (University). I. Day, C Morris (Checkers-Y-Boys), A. Hounsell (High School Old Boys). D. Rattray (Y.M.C.A.), as well as Utley, was not available.
