CHANGE IN CUP DATE
"The Preso" Special Service AUCKLAND. A decision of the Avondale Jockey Club to put back the running of the Avondale Cup has made November one of the most important racing months of the year. The cup, which has been run regularly at the club's spring meeting, in late August of early September, will now be a feature of the Avondale November fixture, the first day of which, last year, was held no November 9.
The president of the club (Mr H. R. Robinson) said yesterday the cup stake for next November would be at least >10.006. The Founders' Handicap, which had been the main event at the November meeting, would replace the cup as the feature race of the spring meeting. As traditional as the early cup date might have been, everyone will welcome the change. Too often the big race has been ruined by rain and a very heavy track. With the Alison Cup at Ellerslie and the Waikato Gold Cup, Foxbridge Plate and Waikato Guineas at Te Rapa, the Avondale race will make up a series of big Auckland and Waikato prises in November which owners and trainers elsewhere in New Zealand might find hard to resist.
