Graduands’ Dinner

Daughters of member* were among thoae who attended the , annual graduands’ dinner given by the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Federation of Unlvenity Women last evening. The mothers and daughters present were Mrs Caroline Oliver (nee Blair) and Mrs F. Blair, Miss Anna Cottrell and Mrs A. I. Cottrell, Miss Kathryn Dallas and Mrs D. B. Dallas, Miss Alison Kidd and Mrs D. Kidd, Miss Kathryn Oddie and Mrs J. C. Oddies and Miss Sarah Woods and Mrs S. Woods. Among the other graduands were Dr Cornelia Vellekoop and Miss Murlis Murad. Dr Vellekoop, a lecturer in psychology and sociology at the university of Canterbury, js the first person to be awarded a Ph.D. in sociology at a New Zealand university. She came to New Zealand from the Netherlands five years ago and plans to take a post at San Diego State College, California, at the end of the year. Miss Murad, an Indonesian, is one of three girls who will receive a bachelor of chemical engineering degree at the University of Canterbury graduation ceremony today. Specially invited guests at the dinner were the Mayoress (Mrs A. R. Guthrey); Mrs Olive Perkins, president of the New Zealand Federation of University Women; Miss C. Tyndall, a member of the University Council: and Mrs N. C. Phillips, wife of the vice-chancellor of the university. Mrs Shirley Shea explained the fellowships offered by the federation, Mrs Perkins spoke of the aims and objects at a national level, and the Christchurch president (Mrs T.
