‘No Effect On Trade’

(N.Z. Press Association)

(N.z. press Association) HAMILTON, May 7. Farm subsidies would not affect New Zealand’s overseas trade relations the general manager of the New Zealand Dairy Company (Mr A. H. Woolven) said today. New Zealand’s lack of subsidies had counted for nothing in previous trade negotiations, he said. Mr Woolven was addressing a meeting of the Institute of Public Administration’s Waikato branch.

Countries buying farm products were interested only In quality and price: the producer country’s internal price structure had no relevance, he said. Australia had been subsidising its farmers for many years, yet received treatment virtually equal to New Zealand’s on the British market.
