TENNIS TEAM IN TRAINING
(N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) LONDON. The New Zealand Davis Cup team, fresh from its 10-1 victory over the Netherlands last week-end, is now in hard training in Cologne. It will play the first round match against West Germany on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The manager, Mr S. Painter, said yesterday that all members of the team were fi| and confident of putting up a good show against the West Germans. In Austria last year, O. N. Parun, likely to be the No. 2 New Zealand singles player, had taken the leading German, W. P. Bungert, to five sets, while both he and B. E. Fairlie had beaten the German No. 3, I. Buding. However, the German singles players seem certain to be Bungert, who reached the final at Wimbledon
two years ago, and C. Kuhnke. Neither Fairlie nor Parun has played Kuhnke before. Bungert is reported to have not yet reached his best form, having only begun training five weeks ago. Last week, Kuhnke beat Bungert in four sets in the final of the Stuttgart tournament.
