FLIGHTS TO SYDNEY
A jet air service to Sydney on Fridays would begin in the first week of July, Mr J. Roysmith said at a meeting of the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce last evening. Air New Zealand and Qantas had decided to start a Friday service instead of the Wednesday flight The air services committee had asked the airlines to start a Friday service during the winter to meet the needs of persons who wanted to get to Sydney for the week-end. It would not be long before there would be a seven-day-a-week service between Christchurch and Sydney because of the volume of traffic, Mr Roysmith said. Last winter the airlines carried about 50 passengers on each flight across the Tasman. The airlines said this was uneconomic and the reason the winter service this year had been curtailed.
