HUNGER IN U.S.
SUS2SOOm Programme (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) WASHINGTON, May 7. President Nixon has announced a SUS2SOOm programme designed to eradicate hunger in the United States. “That hunger and malnutrition should persist in a land such as ours is embarrassing and intolerable,” Mr Nixon said in a special message to Congress. At the heart of the President’s five-point programme is a proposal that needy families should, if necessary, obtain free food stamps from the Government to enable them to maintain a nutritionally complete diet. Other points in the programme include proposals for issuing vouchers to needy pregnant women and mothers of infants, so that they can obtain necessary foodstuffs.' President Nixon says he will call a White House conference on food and nutrition, inviting executives from leading food processing and food distribution companies and trade unions.
