Field goal fillip
The field goal, almost ignored as a scoring weapon before the introduction \ of the four-tackle rale in 1967, has become almost commonplace in Canterbury Rugby league this season. On Saturday six field goals were kicked in the four, senior dub matches. W. D. Bert (Marist-Western Suburbs) enabled his team to upset Hornby in the last minute of play when he was successful from 30 yards - when Marist-Western Suburbs was trailing, 12-13. Earlier in the game B. W. Langton (Hornby) and P. V. B. Smith (Marist-Western Suburbs) bad kicked field goals. In the four rounds this
season 15 field goals have been successful. W. R. Green (Sydenham) kicked two against Linwood in the third round and G. J. Rosanowski (Linwood) and Beri added their second field goals on Saturday. The kicking of field goals has not been confined to the backs. In addition to Rosanowski, the Linwood secondrow forward, R. G. Thorpe, and the Papanui forward trio, R. S. Walker, P. C. Napier and K. R. Blackler, have accepted opportunities this season. The other successful field goal exponents have been I. Stark (Kaiapoi), B. J. Winder (Addington) and G. Tunui (Addington).
