Violence In N.Z.
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) INVERCARGILL, May 6. Films, television, books, magazines and other mass media could not be said to contribute to the present upsurge of violence in New Zealand, the Commissioner of Police (Mr G. C. Urquhart) said in an interview in Invercargill today. “There is no evidence to suggest this,” he said. “The trend towards violence is evident here, particularly among young people, and it seems to be something to do with our permissive society.
“A segment of young people seem to be against authority in any shape or form, and they don’t hesitate to use violence if necessary. “The trend towards violence is world-wide, and it is difficult to understand the reason behind it all. Many youths have had it too easy, and no-one has bothered to castigate them. “They have probably got everything they want, and they just don’t bother thinking about other people’s feelings.”
