Mini-Skirts Checked
Women who wafted past the Cathedral yesterday afternoon faced a skirt-height check conducted by students. Complete with a “U.N. observer,” they were measuring the height from the ground of hemlines. This was done, the students said, under the “Expository Garment Act, 1969,” and those whose skirt length was satisfactory were issued with a “warrant of decency”— invalid unless the bearer viewed “Procesh”—and those
who failed the check were, issued with a “summons” to be st “Procesh.” The standard of “decency” was not revealed, but seemed to vary greatly, depending on the age and legs of the subjects. A record of all measurements was kept but this did not take into account the height of the heels on the subjects* shoes and provided some unusual figures. Another stunt the cruise of the “Avonhead Hillbillies” from the Bam site to the start of the Avon Bike Race down the Avon River, struck problenjs. The three hillbilly students;
and their raft were scheduled ' to arrive at the start of the Bike Race before 1.10 p.m. and then take part in the race. By that time, however, . the students had just reached J the Armagh Street bridge at ’ the entrance to Hagley Park. ! One stunt which did finish on time was the pushing of a : pram from Timaru to Christi church with a letter to the i Mayor of Christchurch (Mr A. 1 R. Guthrey) from the Mayor ] •of Timaru (Mr D. R. ' DoweU). The pram left Timaru on i Monday and arrived at the • Christchurch City Council chambers just before noon J yesterday. I
