POPULAR LEADERS GIVE MARKET BUOYANT TONE
Some notable rises yesterday, especially among leading issues, caused the New Zealand sharemarket to appear more buoyant than the present general decline would suggest. A wide range of stock changed hands, most of them at steady prices.
New Zealand Forest, from whom a good report is expected soon, and Tasman were popular shares in the market. Forest gained 14c during the
day, while the former Bartholomew issue put on 10c, and Tasman added 15c to close at 1040 c. Alex Harvey, National Insurance, New Zealand Breweries and U.E.B. new each rose sc, but the other U.E.B. issues fell slightly with other leaders. Maple stood out among
second-line-stocks with a rise of 12c, and there were no large falls.
Just as the New Zealand list’s tendency to rise ran counter to the general trend, so the overseas list was surprisingly depressed. Issues traded were either steady or cheaper, and C.S.R. N.Z. lost another 20c.
