UNDER-19 MATCH
Prelude To Welsh Test
A combined Christchurch secondary schools’ XV, drawn from the six school teams in the under 19 grade, will play the University under 19 side in the curtain-raiser to the New Zealand v. Wales test at Lancaster Park on May 31. The schools’ team will be drawn from boys from Christchurch Boys’ High School, Christ’s College, St Andrew’s College, St Bede’s College, Xavier College, and Shirley Boys’ High School. It will be coached by the former Canterbury and Otago representative, Mr D. C. Leary, a master at Riccarton High School. The selector of the University team is the former All Black hooker, Mr J. N. Creighton.
Trial Gama.—The Canterbury selectors (Dr J. D. Stewart and Mr M. J. Dixon) sought permission from the Canterbury Rugby Union management committee last evening to hold a trial match at Rugby Park on May 21, but Mr M. R. Barnett said the sub-unions side was to play the Maoris XV at Kaiapol on that day. It was decided to suggest that the trial game be played early In June.
Ordered Off.—Two players ordered oft in an under-18 match last week were suspended for two playing Saturdays.
Wellington Match.—The Canterbury union will renew Its request for the return game in Christchurch to be played on either September 16 or 17. Wellington had suggested October 4 as an alternative but Canterbury felt that this would cause difficulties. The Canterbury Cricket Association was prepared to co-operate, providing there was no interference to the activities of the Lancaster Park Cricket Club.
Appointed.—Additional Canterbury selectora appointed were:—L. Tibbotts (junior, forwards), B. Duncan (under-20 forwards). A sub-unions’ representative, Mr D. C. McMillan, was co-opted as a member of the colts’ selection panel.
