From the Consumer Guide to Carpet A word or two about underlays From Christine Compton your U.E.B. Carpet Consultant * * * For longer carpet life A good underlay makes a carpet more attractive in appearance, more comfortable to walk on, and and this is the important thing it definitely lengthens the life of the carpet So that the extra money you spend on buying a good underlay is unquestionably money well spent •• . • Types of carpet underlay A number of different types are available from carpet stores, the cheapest being the brown felt type. Others are in hair felt waffle design foam rubber and plastic foam. ♦ * -» New cushions for carpets A type of underlay new in this country is the Carpet Cushion made from foamed latex, now available at carpet stores and departments. The foam latex is attached to a jute backing, with the latex to the floor, so that the backing material grips the backing of the carpet. Carpet Cushions will considerably extend the life of any carpet, so that they represent good value. * ♦ ♦ Ask the salesman As with most things to do with buying carpet, you would be wise to ask the advice of an experienced retail carpet salesman when choosing underlay. The choice is usually governed by the type and quality of carpet selected, and the area in which it is to be laid. Where there is heavy traffic, for example, the permanently resilient foamed latex Carpet Cushion acts as a shock absorber, adds years to the life of the carpet. Your choice in a U.E.B. carpet will give excellent service because it is made from proven materials; you will get the best wear from it if you have a good underlay under it. More on this subject next week.
