Disabled golfers

One of the more unusual golf tournaments in the country, the annual national tournament for disabled golfers, will be held at Cambridge on Sunday.

The South Island representative on the organising committee. Mr L. P. Devlin, of Ranglora. is seeking other disabled golfers who might be interested In playing in the tournament.

First held at Cambridge live or six years ago, the national tournament for "wingies" and “limbles" originated largely through the enthusiasm of D. Ingleby (Te Awamutu) and L. Chivers (Cambridge) who have continued to shoulder a large share of the organising responsibility. Mr Devlin first played In the tournament In 1966,

when he was the sole South Island representative in a field of 24. As a result of the Interest in the tournament then, a committee was formed to develop it on a national basis. Mr Devlin was elected to the committee to look after the South Island section of the committee’s activities and he has continued to fill this role.

Last year 40 competed, including several South Island players.

As well as the overall championship, the tournament Includes separate sections for one - armed or one-legged players. Various business houses have given trophies and because of Mr Devlin's interest five Ranglora firms are among those who have helped.
