RACING Just Sam Steeples Fancy At Marton

“The Press” Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH. Just Sam will start at Marton today on the first stages of a jumping campaign designed to have him at peak for the Grand National Steeplechase in August. Early as it is, his trainer J. P. Garter, is already hopeful that Just Sam will prove good enough to win this year’s feature race at Riccarton.

Meanwhile Just Sam is running over only two miles and a half against a very moderate field. He likes Marton and two days of fine weather suggest the track will be nowhere near as heavy as is usual at this time of the year.

The rangy gelding has had only one flat race to fit him for the Marshall Memorial, yet he looks as forward as any of his rivals. It takes very little to attune him. Furthermore, he has been getting through plenty of steady work and a series of

hunters’ trials as well. Tbe top-weight. Linred, is hardly likely to start, so Just Sam's main rival is probably Baudelaire. He began a fresh jumping campaign at Hawera last week, went very boldly and beat all except Robert Earl, which is proven over country and perhaps better seasoned as well. But Baudelaire improved quickly with that appearance and every drop of rain would help his chances. He failed to show anywhere near bis true form last winter, because of rheumatics. He was never free in his action nor was be properly trained because of the complaint. Now Baudelaire seems right back to his former best. He also is booked for Riccarton as a long-range mission. FIRST LEG The slight firming of the ; tracks has kept Sherlocks ini favour for the Taylor Mem-' onal, first leg of the double.; His main opponent is likely to be the locally-trained i Henech, down to have his first open-class run. These two should be the pick of the field. In the second leg of the double Shelly Burford and Patnda will attract most attention. They are on trial for Trentham next Saturday. So, too, are Dunraven and Ana Kildare, two worth watching in coming weeks. Selections Noon Hammond Hack j Hurdles: Contradict. John i Llewellyn, Jarnac. 12.33 p.m.—Duncan Hack Handicap: Lady Black.
